What you’ll learn

Multiply monomials and polynomials.

Key idea

Multiply coefficients and variable factors separately; x times x creates the squared term.

Outside coefficient and variable multiply both addends; x times x has squared power.

Worked example

Enter the exact value or ordered values in the format requested below.

Expand -6x(3x+2); enter collected polynomial, not the original product.

  1. Distribute -6x: first product -18x²; second product -12x.
  2. Collected result -18x²-12x; inverse coefficient conditions 3k=-18 and 2k=-12 agree at k=-6.

Answer: -18x²-12x

Quick Check

Evaluate a worked attempt at multiply monomials and polynomials, identify the first invalid step, and provide the correction.

Expand -6x(6x-6): Step 1 gives first product -36x². Step 2 leaves the constant -6 unchanged and reports -36x²-6. Locate the first invalid step and repair the product.
