What you’ll learn
Choose appropriate quantities for modeling.
Key idea
Match each supplied unit-price coefficient to the count of that category; summed counts must remain tickets.
Unit price multiplies its category count; prices themselves cannot be added as ticket counts.
Worked example
Enter the exact value or ordered values in the format requested below.
Adult tickets cost 9 dollars each; child tickets cost 3 dollars each. Sold total 10 tickets and revenue 60 dollars. Define x and y for model R=9x+3y; enter x=...;y=... as ticket quantities.
- In R=9x+3y, dollars/adult ticket times adult count and dollars/child ticket times child count both produce dollars.
- x=5,y=5 verify x+y=10 and 9×5+3×5=60; the variables are counts, not prices.
Answer: x=adult tickets;y=child tickets
Quick Check
Choose which candidate representation satisfies the requirements of 'Choose appropriate quantities for modeling' and justify the choice.
Adult tickets cost 9 dollars each; child tickets cost 5 dollars each. Sold total 6 tickets and revenue 46 dollars. Select definitions satisfying x+y=6 and R=9x+5y.
