What you’ll learn

Find midpoint.

Key idea

A midpoint averages each matching pair of coordinates; its position is not the endpoint difference.

Midpoint is a point location obtained by averages, not the displacement vector.

Worked example

Enter the exact value or ordered values in the format requested below.

Find the midpoint of the segment with endpoints A=(-3, -3) and B=(1, 1). Enter its ordered-pair coordinates.

  1. Average x: (-3+(1))/2=-1.
  2. Average y: (-3+(1))/2=-1; midpoint=(-1,-1).

Answer: (-1,-1)

Quick Check

Evaluate a worked attempt at find midpoint, identify the first invalid step, and provide the correction.

For A=(-3, 1), B=(-1, -3), student Step 1 subtracts B-A=(2,-4) to find the midpoint. Step 2 reports that displacement as the midpoint. Locate the first invalid step for the requested task and give the correct midpoint.
