What you’ll learn

Write inequalities from situations.

Key idea

Strict comparisons exclude the boundary itself; test a point on each side.

Do not reverse the comparison side or include the boundary; inclusive symbols appear only as rejected flawed models.

Worked example

Enter the exact value or ordered values in the format requested below.

A sensor value x must be strictly less than -13. Write the strict inequality; equality does not qualify.

  1. The comparison requires x strictly less than -13.
  2. Use x<-13; the boundary is excluded and test value -14 is included.

Answer: x<-13

Quick Check

Choose which candidate representation satisfies the requirements of 'Write inequalities from situations' and justify the choice.

Select an inequality matching 'strictly greater than 0' and table rows x=0 excluded, x=1 included.
