What you’ll learn
Draw polygons from coordinates.
Key idea
Axis-aligned edges hold one coordinate fixed; perpendicular edges vary the other coordinate.
Consecutive vertices must share the appropriate coordinates; read x before y and do not confuse the named corner with a neighboring vertex.
Worked example
Enter the exact value or ordered values in the format requested below.
The graph joins A-B-C-D-A. Read vertex C as an ordered pair.
Marked coordinates: D=(-3, -1); C=(2, -1); A=(-3, -3); B=(2, -3).
- AB has constant y=-3 and horizontal change 5; BC has constant x=2 and vertical change 2.
- D combines A's x-coordinate -3 with C's y-coordinate -1, closing the axis-aligned rectangle.
Answer: (2,-1)
Quick Check
Relate the graph used in 'Draw polygons from coordinates' to an equation, table, transformation, or verbal description.
Connect the coordinate graph A-B-C-D-A to a shape description and side directions.
Marked coordinates: D=(-3, 0); C=(2, 0); A=(-3, -2); B=(2, -2).
