What you’ll learn

Find volume of rectangular prisms.

Key idea

Volume is base area times height; cubic units require three length factors.

Base area times height has cubic units; an area-plus-length expression cannot represent prism volume.

Worked example

Enter the exact value or ordered values in the format requested below.

A rectangular prism has mutually perpendicular edges 2, 3, 9 cm. Enter its numerical volume in cubic centimeters.

  1. One base layer has area 2×3=6 cm².
  2. Multiplying by height gives V=6×9=54 cm³.

Answer: 54

Quick Check

Evaluate a worked attempt at find volume of rectangular prisms, identify the first invalid step, and provide the correction.

A student computes volume for prism edges 2, 7, 2 cm: Step 1: V=lwh. Step 2: base area 2×7=14. Step 3: V=14+2=16 cm³. Locate the first invalid step and correct it.
