What you’ll learn

Solve multi-step numerical problems.

Key idea

Use parentheses to keep the grouped quantity together, then follow the order of operations. Multiplication and division come before addition and subtraction unless parentheses set a different order.

A context can help decide whether an answer is reasonable. If three packs each contain eight pencils, there are 3 × 8 pencils before adding loose pencils or taking some away. Keep the unit with the result and check that the arithmetic follows the story's sequence.

Worked example

Enter the exact value or ordered values in the format requested below.

An order contains 2 items at $5/4 each plus one fixed $4 fee for the entire order. Enter total as an exact dollar number.

  1. The items cost 2×(5/4)=$5/2.
  2. Add the one-time fee once: 5/2+4=$13/2.

Answer: 13/2

Quick Check

Evaluate a worked attempt at solve multi-step numerical problems, identify the first invalid step, and provide the correction.

For 2 items costing $9/4 each and one fixed $5 fee, Step 1 models total=2×(9/4+5)=$29/2. Locate the first invalid step and correct total.
