What you’ll learn

Find probabilities of compound events.

Key idea

Independent stages create equally likely ordered pairs; a 'both' event differs from a union and shared favorable pairs must not be counted twice.

Both independent events require joint outcomes; union overlap must be counted once.

Worked example

Enter the exact value or ordered values in the format requested below.

For independent equal-area spinners with 2 and 7 sectors, first 1 and first 1 labels favorable respectively, enter exact probability that both spins are favorable.

  1. The two spins are independent and their 2×7=14 ordered pairs are equally likely.
  2. Both favorable gives 1×1=1 pairs, probability 1/14; at least one favorable gives 8 pairs, probability 4/7.

Answer: 1/14

Quick Check

Interpret the result of 'Find probabilities of compound events' in the data-generating context, including units and population limits.

For independent equal-area spinners with 3 and 5 sectors, first 1 and first 1 labels favorable respectively, interpret the event 'at least one spin is favorable' from complete ordered outcomes.
