What you’ll learn
Create and interpret scatter plots.
Key idea
Every paired observation becomes one point with first entry horizontal and second entry vertical.
Preserve each observed horizontal/vertical pair; never predict unobserved points or interchange axes.
Worked example
Enter the exact value or ordered values in the format requested below.
Read y at labeled observed point A, x=1. Horizontal x=day, vertical y=rainfall in mm. Enter only the number.
Marked coordinates: A=(1, 6); *=(2, 3); *=(0, 2).
- Each observation has horizontal x and vertical y; the table is x: 0,1,2; y: 2,6,3.
- A is (1,6); the complete observed set is {(0,2),(1,6),(2,3)}. Preserve each pair without swapping axes.
Answer: 6
Quick Check
Relate the graph used in 'Create and interpret scatter plots' to an equation, table, transformation, or verbal description.
Connect this observed plot (x=day,y=rainfall) to its matching paired table.
Marked coordinates: A=(1, 5); *=(0, 3); *=(2, 2).
