What you’ll learn
Create equations in two variables.
Key idea
The zero-input amount is fixed; the per-input price multiplies mileage.
Mileage and fare keep their specified units; zero-input amount is fixed, per-mile rate multiplies x.
Worked example
Enter the exact value or ordered values in the format requested below.
Taxi fare is 10 dollars initially plus 5 dollars per mile; x=miles,y=dollars. Create an equation in x and y for all trip lengths.
- At x=0 the fare is 10; each mile contributes 5 dollars.
- Relation y=5x+10 matches paired rows [[0, 10], [1, 15], [2, 20]] and respects x length versus y money.
Answer: y=5x+10
Quick Check
Choose which candidate representation satisfies the requirements of 'Create equations in two variables' and justify the choice.
Taxi fare is 14 dollars initially plus 6 dollars per mile; x=miles,y=dollars. Observed table (x,y)=[[0, 14], [1, 20], [2, 26]]. Select a matching two-variable model.
