What you’ll learn
Create linear equations from situations.
Key idea
Multiply the repeating rate by its labeled count and use equality for an exact total.
Preserve fixed/repeating quantity roles and equality; a solved count alone is not the required model.
Worked example
Enter the exact value or ordered values in the format requested below.
A gym charges 8 dollars once plus 4 dollars per class. Let x be class count; exact bill is 20 dollars. Create an equation in x; do not solve it.
- One-time fee is 8; repeating charge is 4x, both in dollars.
- The exact total constraint is 8+4x=20; supplied feasible count 3 verifies the bill without replacing the requested model with a solved count.
Answer: 8+4x=20
Quick Check
Choose which candidate representation satisfies the requirements of 'Create linear equations from situations' and justify the choice.
A gym charges 8 dollars once plus 7 dollars per class. Let x be class count; exact bill is 57 dollars. Select the model preserving the fee roles and exact bill.
