What you’ll learn
Determine domain and range.
Key idea
Domain collects distinct inputs; range collects distinct outputs within the stated finite relation.
Do not swap domain/range or silently replace the finite input set with all real numbers.
Worked example
Enter the exact value or ordered values in the format requested below.
For finite relation {(-2,-5),(0,-1),(1,1)}, enter both distinct-value sets as D={...};R={...}.
- The explicitly finite domain is {-2,0,1}; collecting second coordinates gives range {-5,-1,1}.
- The missing row output 1 requires 2k-1=1, so k=1. Do not replace this finite domain with all real inputs.
Answer: D={-2,0,1};R={-5,-1,1}
Quick Check
Evaluate a worked attempt at determine domain and range, identify the first invalid step, and provide the correction.
For finite relation {(-2,0),(0,4),(1,6)}: Step 1 collects inputs as D={-2,0,1}. Step 2 copies those inputs as R={-2,0,1}. Find first invalid step and correct both sets.
