What you’ll learn

Analyze categorical data.

Key idea

A joint cell belongs to both its row and column; a within-row proportion uses that row total.

Raw counts cannot substitute for row percentages with different group sizes; row labels and sample limits matter.

Worked example

Enter the exact value or ordered values in the format requested below.

Exclusive survey groups: Sports [Yes 4, No 6, total 10]; Music [Yes 3, No 7, total 10]; grand total 20. Recover numerical missing Yes column total.

  1. Yes column total is 4+3=7; No total 13; margins sum to 20.
  2. Within-row shares are Sports 2/5 and Music 3/10, hence Sports greater. These describe this surveyed sample; compare proportions using their own row totals.

Answer: 7

Quick Check

Interpret the result of 'Analyze categorical data' in the data-generating context, including units and population limits.

Exclusive survey groups: Sports [Yes 7, No 3, total 10]; Music [Yes 7, No 3, total 10]; grand total 20. Interpret the Sports-Yes cell within its row, with sample limits.
