What you’ll learn
Translate verbal descriptions into expressions.
Key idea
A model must match both the multiplier and the separate constant; parentheses change which terms are multiplied.
A candidate matching only one table row can have the wrong coefficient; a separate added or removed quantity must not be multiplied again.
Worked example
Enter the exact value or ordered values in the format requested below.
Write an expression for '7 more than 2 times x'. Enter an equivalent algebraic expression.
- The multiplier 2 belongs only to x.
- The separate signed change is 7, yielding 2x+7; at x=6 it gives 19.
Answer: 2x+7
Quick Check
Choose which candidate representation satisfies the requirements of 'Translate verbal descriptions into expressions' and justify the choice.
A rule table gives x=6, output=19, and every unit increase of x raises output by 4. Select an expression satisfying both constraints.
