What you’ll learn

Convert measurement units using ratios.

Key idea

The supplied equality defines an exact conversion ratio, not a quantity to add.

Use the ratio direction that cancels the initial unit; an equivalent number with the wrong unit is not the requested measurement.

Worked example

Enter the exact value or ordered values in the format requested below.

Use 1 yard = 3 feet. Convert 16 yards to feet while preserving the measurement. Include the target unit.

  1. Each yard supplies 3 feet.
  2. Thus 16×3=48 feet represents the same measurement.

Answer: 48 feet

Quick Check
