What you’ll learn
Calculate mean.
Key idea
The mean is the total divided by observation count, not by gaps or distinct-value intervals.
Divide the total by observation count, not gaps; no individual must equal the sample's fair-share value.
Worked example
Enter the exact value or ordered values in the format requested below.
Four observed students read (2, 10, 18, 34) books. Enter the exact mean books per student.
- The four observed students' total is 64 books.
- Mean=64/4=16 books per student; this equal-share value is not required to be an observed count.
Answer: 16
Quick Check
Interpret the result of 'Calculate mean' in the data-generating context, including units and population limits.
For four observed students with counts (6, 7, 8, 10), mean=31/4. Select its supported interpretation.
