What you’ll learn

Calculate and interpret MAD.

Key idea

MAD averages nonnegative distances from the mean, not signed deviations or squared distances.

Average absolute distances, not signed cancellation or n-1; MAD does not fix every pupil's distance or a schoolwide census.

Worked example

Enter the exact value or ordered values in the format requested below.

Four observed reading times in minutes are [32, 34, 36, 38]. Calculate MAD as an exact number of minutes.

  1. Observed mean=(32+34+36+38)/4=35 minutes.
  2. Absolute distances are 3,1,1,3, sum 8; MAD=8/4=2 minutes.

Answer: 2

Quick Check

Interpret the result of 'Calculate and interpret MAD' in the data-generating context, including units and population limits.

Observed reading times [22, 24, 26, 28] have mean 25 and MAD 2 minutes. Interpret the statistic with the sample's units and limits.
