What you’ll learn

Read and create dot plots.

Key idea

Repeated observations must each have their own dot, stacked at their exact value.

One dot represents one observation; labels are not frequencies and duplicate reports must not be discarded.

Worked example

Enter the exact value or ordered values in the format requested below.

Read this labeled dot display. How many reports are at exactly 1 books? 1 books: ● 2 books: ●●●● 3 books: ●●●●

  1. Each dot represents one report; stack counts for values [1, 2, 3] are [1, 4, 4].
  2. Expanding every stack gives (1, 2, 2, 2, 2, 3, 3, 3, 3), with 9 total observations.

Answer: 1

Quick Check

Relate the graph used in 'Read and create dot plots' to an equation, table, transformation, or verbal description.

Connect this dot plot to a raw-data list preserving all observations. 1 books: ●●● 2 books: ●●● 3 books: ●
