What you’ll learn

Interpret fraction division visually.

Key idea

A count of serving-sized pieces is total amount divided by serving size.

A new cell denominator requires scaling the shaded numerator too; the one-cell serving count is not the original numerator.

Worked example

Enter the exact value or ordered values in the format requested below.

A jug holds 3/4 cup. A bar is partitioned into 8 equal 1/8-cup cells. Each serving is one cell. Enter the division equation counting servings, including its quotient.

  1. Rewrite the available 3/4 cup as 6/8 cup.
  2. Each shaded cell is one serving, so (3/4)÷(1/8)=6.

Answer: (3/4)÷(1/8)=6

Quick Check

Choose which candidate representation satisfies the requirements of 'Interpret fraction division visually' and justify the choice.

A bar has 18 equal 1/18-cup cells. Which model represents 4/6 cup and groups it into one-cell servings?
