What you’ll learn
Perform translations on coordinates.
Key idea
Translations add the same signed vector to every corresponding vertex without changing shape.
Apply the same signed vector to every vertex and retain complete corresponding image coordinates.
Worked example
Enter the exact value or ordered values in the format requested below.
Read image I of P after vector (2,2), x horizontal and y vertical. Enter I's coordinate pair.
Marked coordinates: I=(0, 0); P=(-2, -2).
- Every vertex receives signed vector (2,2); its x and y components are added separately.
- Original vertices [(-2, -2), (0, -2), (-2, 0)] map to [(0, 0), (2, 0), (0, 2)]; the first image is (0,0), and differences all equal (2,2).
Answer: (0,0)
Quick Check
Relate the graph used in 'Perform translations on coordinates' to an equation, table, transformation, or verbal description.
Connect original/image graph with mapping rows [((-2, 0), (-1, -2)), ((0, 0), (1, -2)), ((-2, 2), (-1, 0))] to one vector rule.
Marked coordinates: P=(-2, 0); I=(-1, -2).
