What you’ll learn

Perform and describe translations.

Key idea

Recover displacement by image minus original in both coordinate positions.

Every vertex receives the same vector; reverse subtraction and different-vertex vectors are invalid.

Worked example

Enter the exact value or ordered values in the format requested below.

Triangle A=(-2, -2), B=(0, -2), C=(-2, -1); translation vector (2,2). Find C's image.

  1. The common vector is (2,2); add its components to every original vertex.
  2. Images A, B, C are [(0, 0), (2, 0), (0, 1)]; each coordinate difference is (2,2).

Answer: (0,1)

Quick Check

Evaluate a worked attempt at perform and describe translations, identify the first invalid step, and provide the correction.

Triangle A=(-2, 0), B=(0, 0), C=(-2, 1); translation vector (1,-2). Student: Step 1, A_image=(-1, -2), B_image=(1, -2). Step 2, C_image=(-1,3). Identify first invalid step and correct C.

A translation applies the same signed displacement to every vertex.
