What you’ll learn

Calculate relative frequencies.

Key idea

A within-group relative frequency divides its favorable count by that group's total, not by the combined sample or favorable column.

Use each group's denominator rather than the combined sample or favorable column; compare rates, not counts.

Worked example

Enter the exact value or ordered values in the format requested below.

Observed table A: yes 2,no 8; B: yes 6,no 14. Compute within-A yes relative frequency; enter exact fraction or equivalent decimal.

  1. A conditional yes rate=2/10=1/5; B rate=6/20=3/10.
  2. Cross-products 2×20=40 and 6×10=60 compare rates with their own row denominators; absolute difference=1/10.

Answer: 1/5

Quick Check

Interpret the result of 'Calculate relative frequencies' in the data-generating context, including units and population limits.

Observed table A: yes 3,no 7; B: yes 2,no 23. Interpret the within-A yes proportion 3/10 in context.
