What you’ll learn

Divide multi-digit whole numbers.

Key idea

A division algorithm must account for the entire dividend, not only its first partial product.

The leftover dividend is not a quotient; all partial products must account for the full original amount.

Worked example

Enter the exact value or ordered values in the format requested below.

Compute 444 ÷ 12 exactly. Enter the whole-number quotient.

  1. 12×30=360, leaving 444-360=84.
  2. The remainder gives 84÷12=7 more groups; 30+7=37.

Answer: 37

Quick Check

Evaluate a worked attempt at divide multi-digit whole numbers, identify the first invalid step, and provide the correction.

A student writes Step 1: 12×60=720, leaving 60. Step 2: use only 4 more groups and claim 780÷12=64 exactly. Locate the first invalid step and correct it.
